To be upholders of Civil Service values


  • Advise on the promotion of the Civil Service’s core values

     

    • The Commissioners’ audit of departments’ activities in promoting and upholding the Civil Service Code has produced a great many good practice recommendations and examples that have been communicated to departments.

    • The Commissioners have published a new suite of publications and resources which explain how we discharge our responsibilities in relation to the Civil Service Code.

    • Sponsorship of Cabinet Secretary Award at Civil Service Awards November 2009; award criteria included communicating or displaying the core values.

    • The Commissioners have sponsored ‘Your Space’ an art competition for civil servants to illustrate the Civil Service values.

 

  • Develop appeals monitoring

     

    • Commissioners’ audit on promotion of the Code gathered information on the number and types of appeals handled at departmental level.

    • Commissioners have published new policies and practices in relation to Civil Service Code appeals.

    • Commissioners are developing, with the Cabinet Office, a web-based facility for Nominated Officers to provide resources and the ability to share experiences and seek advice.


  • Support moves to enshrine the constitutional position of the Civil Service

     

    • The Commissioners contributed to consideration of the Civil Service clauses in the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act.

    • The Commissioners have adopted an implementation plan in preparation of the creation of the Civil Service Commission by January 2011.

    • The Commissioners are working with the Cabinet Office to develop the new administrative apparatus required for the Civil Service Commission.


  • Communication

     

    • The Commissioners actively participated in ‘Civil Service Live’ in London and Manchester to engage with a wide range of civil servants from across the country.

    • The Commissioners’ staff have maintained their visits to departments and agencies and their participation in training events to explain the Commissioners’ role.

    • The Commissioners have hosted an increased number of overseas visitors seeking to learn more about the Commissioners’ role and its relevance for their national governance.
