Civil Service Live
The Civil Service Commissioners were very pleased to be a part of Civil Service Live. This was an exciting event at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre from 1st to 3rd April 2008. The first event of its kind, its aim was to inspire innovation and encourage good practice.
Janet Paraskeva chaired a lively ‘Question Time’ debate on Civil Service values. Janet was joined on the panel by Sir Gus O‘Donnell, Richard Mottram, ex-Permanent Secretary, Matthew d’Ancona, editor of The Spectator, and Maggie Semple, CEO of the Experience Corps and ex-Civil Service Commissioner . The panel responded to a wide variety of challenging questions put by civil servants. These ranged from whether it was ever right for civil servants to blow the whistle, to the rights or wrongs of shopping at John Lewis for your Permanent Secretary. This was a fun, but thoughtful, way of engaging with an audience of civil servants on real day-to-day situations where the values can be tested.
The Commissioners also had a stand for the three days of the event. The Commissioners and our staff were pleased to meet many civil servants from around the country and to share insights and experiences.
