Extreme example
The most striking was a payment of 40% less than the advertised rate. The successful candidate had been doing the job on a temporary promotion at the time it was advertised. The job was advertised at £140,000. The successful applicant had been working at a much lower rate in an acting capacity. In this instance, we did become aware of the situation at the time. We could see no justification for paying the successful candidate a rate so significantly less than the job had been advertised at. Despite representations the department concerned refused to pay the successful applicant any more.
