The effect of gender

There is some evidence that gender might play a part in determining the rate of pay, at least for candidates from the Civil Service who are paid under the advertised rate. An analysis of this year’s figures shows that 7 civil servant candidates were paid over the advertised rate; 5 were men and 2 were women. This ratio is close to the ratio of female appointments to all senior jobs of 24%. Ten civil servants were paid under the advertised rate. Five were men and five women. As only 24% of appointments went to women it seems that female civil servants have a disproportionate chance of being paid under the advertised rate. This is something we will be monitoring carefully over the next year.
